What is reconstructive surgery? Reconstruction is designed to restore a part of your body to more closely resemble the way it was (or should have been) before an injury or disease process such as cancer. This may be anything from rebuilding a new breast after mastectomy for breast cancer, to replacing a patch of skin which has been removed by a car accident, or just stitching up a cut accurately after a simple injury. Reconstructive surgery may help to restore the appearance, or the function of a body part, or most commonly a combination of both.
When should reconstruction be considered? It is best to plan the reconstruction as early in the course of treatment as possible. This means considering it from the time of the injury, or in the case of cancer or diseases, before any removal surgery. Reconstruction may not always be recommended straight away, but the ideal timing should be planned from the beginning.
