When are they used? Chemical peels can be a useful tool to improve skin tone and texture, fine lines, sun damage and some pigment changes. They can also be a useful adjunct to surgical rejuvenation procedures to optimize the skin quality. A wide range of peeling agents are on the market, and each can be used at a range of different concentrations to give the desired effect. Some of the deeper peels have largely been replaced by Laser resurfacing, because of the greater predictability and evenness which this newer technology can offer. Dr Campbell can discuss the merits of both of these resurfacing techniques, and offer whichever best suits your needs. What is involved? Chemical peels are a quick outpatient procedure, aimed at achieving the benefits of resurfacing, with minimal "down time". Most patients are able to return to work the same day if they wish, and can usually apply makeup again the very next day. There is usually some minor redness and skin flaking for a few days, and during this period you should be very conscious to minimize sun exposure. In most cases, a course of six peels, several weeks apart, is the best way to achieve the maximum benefit.
